Why This Guide Exists

Everything You Need to Know — No Sales Pitch

If you're here, you're thinking about a sign for your entrance. Maybe you've been thinking about it for years. Maybe you just started looking.

Either way, you probably have the same questions everyone does: How big should it be? What's it going to cost? How does the whole process actually work?

This guide answers all of it. No pressure, no commitment. Just the information you need to make a smart decision — whether that's with us or with someone else.

"We hung the sign last weekend and three neighbors have already stopped to ask where we got it. The quality is unbelievable."

— Greg & Carol, Olympic Valley, CA

Step 1 — Sizing

What Size Sign Does Your Entrance Actually Need?

Most people underestimate this. A sign that looks great in a photo can disappear on a wide entrance. The rule of thumb: your sign should be about two-thirds the width of your opening.

Popular Sizes

84 x 20 in (7 ft) Mid-size openings
96 x 22 in (8 ft) Most PopularBest Value

From Leah, Our Lead Designer

Our most popular sign is 96 x 22 inches (8 ft). For entrances 12 feet or wider, it hits the sweet spot — visible from the road without overwhelming your posts. From 50 feet away, anything smaller than 6 feet starts to disappear.

Hanging Sign Clearance

If you're hanging your sign between posts, make sure there's at least 13.5 feet of clearance beneath it. That's the minimum for a semi truck or trailer to pass underneath. Lower clearance? A post-mount sign sits on top of the beam instead.

Step 2 — Mounting

Three Mounting Styles

Each sign ships with the hardware for your chosen mount built in. No extra charge, no extra parts to buy.

Hanging Mount

Our most popular option. Two welded eyelets on top connect to chains, hanging the sign beneath your crossbeam. Creates the classic ranch entrance look.

Best for: Entrances with a crossbeam or overhead structure. Requires 13.5 ft minimum clearance for tall vehicles.

Included: Welded eyelets. Chains sold separately or use your own.

Step 3 — Design

Designing Your Sign

Every sign is designed from scratch by our lead designer Leah. Not pulled from a template. You tell us what you want, and she draws it.

Your Text

The name on your sign is the most important element. Keep it short — two to four words is ideal. Ranch name, family name, property name. Longer text gets crowded and harder to read from a distance.

How Metal Lettering Works

When text is cut from steel, letters with enclosed spaces (A, O, R, D, B, P, Q) need small connecting tabs to hold the center in place. This is standard for all laser-cut signs. Leah handles it automatically.

Design Elements

We recommend 2-4 elements for the best visual impact. More than four starts to look busy, especially at smaller sizes. Here are the most popular choices:

Horses Mountains Elk Pine Trees Cattle Cowboys Brands Eagles Dogs Deer Tractors Barns Fish Moose Bears

No extra charge for design elements or complexity. The price is based on sign size, not how many horses are on it.

Fully Custom — We Can Draw Just About Anything

The elements above are just starting points. If you can describe it or send us a photo of it, Leah can draw it into your sign. Every design is built around what matters to you.

  • Your ranch or cattle brand
  • Your company or family logo
  • A specific breed of dog, horse, or livestock
  • A photo of your pet turned into a steel silhouette
  • A scene that means something to your family — mountains, a cabin, a river, a treeline
  • Military or first responder emblems
  • Religious symbols or scripture references
  • Anything you can describe or sketch — we'll figure out how to make it work in steel
Size Limitation

Any element smaller than 1 inch tall is difficult to cut cleanly from steel. Livestock brands and small icons work best placed in a corner or along the top edge where they can be slightly larger.

Step 4 — Pricing

What Does It Cost?

We price by size. A bigger sign costs more. A more complex design does not. Whether you want an eagle, three cowboys, and a mountain range or just your ranch name — same price for the same size.

$1,200 – $1,800
Most families land in this range for a custom ranch sign.
Exact price depends on your sign size. Bethany will text you a clear number based on your entrance width — no guessing, no surprises.

How Payment Works

We split the cost into three parts so you never pay for the full sign upfront:

10%

Design Reservation

A small deposit to start your custom design. Fully refundable if you don't love the concept. Leah begins drawing your sign from scratch.

50%

Production Deposit

Once you approve the design, 50% to begin laser cutting and fabrication. Nothing gets cut until you give the green light.

40%

Balance on Completion

Remaining balance when your sign is finished and ready to ship. We send photos before it goes out the door.

Why a Design Deposit?

Leah spends real time drawing each sign from scratch. The small 10% deposit ensures we're working with serious customers so every project gets the attention it deserves. If you see the design and it's not for you, the deposit comes right back.

Common Questions

Straight Answers

How long does the whole process take? +

From first contact to sign in your hands, most orders take 4–6 weeks. Design is about a week (depending on revisions), production runs 3–5 weeks after you approve. Rush orders available for an additional fee.

What if I don't like the design? +

Two rounds of revisions are included. If you're still not happy, your 10% design deposit is fully refundable. We don't cut steel until you've approved the final design. You're never locked into something you don't love.

Can I send my own design or logo? +

Yes. Ranch brands, logos, sketches, photos of your animals — send them over and Leah will work them into the layout. Very small or intricate elements (under 1 inch) may need to be simplified slightly for clean cutting.

How thick is the metal? +

We use 12-gauge steel (0.105" thick) — that's 78% thicker than the 16-gauge most competitors use. Our signs are built to last decades, not years.

What color is the sign? +

Black matte powder coat is the default and by far the most popular. The dark silhouette against sky or wood posts is the classic ranch entrance look. Other powder coat colors are available — just ask.

How long does the powder coat last? +

It depends on your environment. In most climates the finish holds up well for many years. Signs in direct desert sun or high-salt coastal areas will show wear sooner than signs in cooler, drier climates.

The powder coat is a protective finish — it's not permanent, but the 12-gauge steel underneath is built to last decades. If your finish ever needs refreshing down the road, any local powder coater can re-coat it.

What does the lifetime guarantee cover? +

Our lifetime structural guarantee covers the steel and the welds — if a weld fails or the steel breaks, we make it right. The guarantee is on craftsmanship, not on cosmetic wear from weather exposure. The sign itself is built to outlast the posts it hangs on.

Do you build the posts or just the sign? +

We build the steel sign and its mounting hardware. The wooden posts, crossbeam, and concrete work are handled by your local contractor or you. Most customers use 6x6 or round timber posts set in concrete. We can advise on spacing and height.

How much is shipping? +

Free. Anywhere in the lower 48 states. Custom crated to prevent damage. Signs over 8 feet may ship via freight — we handle all the logistics at no extra charge. Alaska and Hawaii shipments are quoted separately.

Where are you located? +

Bozeman, Montana. J Dub's was founded in 1980 by Jerry Bement — a close family friend. When Jerry retired, Brad and Carley bought the business and run the full production shop today — laser cutting, welding, powder coating, and shipping from the same location.

Who am I actually talking to? +

Bethany is your main point of contact — she handles quoting, questions, and keeps you updated throughout the process. Leah is our lead designer who draws your sign from scratch. Brad and Carley own and run the shop. We're a real team in a real shop in Bozeman, Montana — not a website with a form and a prayer.

I'm not ready to buy. I'm just looking. +

That's exactly what this guide is for. Now you know the sizes, prices, and how the process works. When you're ready — next week or next year — text Bethany and we'll get started. No expiration, no pressure.

Do you offer discounts? +

10% on multi-sign orders. 10% veteran discount for those who have served. Beyond that, our pricing is our pricing — we don't negotiate or price match. The quality of steel, design, and finish is something we refuse to cut corners on.
